- Drive a truck, van or bus (including a prime mover or a mobile crane) over 8t GVM with a maximum of 2 axles (1 at rear).
- You may also tow a trailer with a maximum weight of 9t GVM.
Eligibility
- Hold your car licence (min. Red Plates) for a period of 12 months before upgrading to LR/MR licence.
- Complete the Heavy Vehicle theory test with Qld Transport, which can be done on the day of your practical driving test.

MR LICENCE TO DRIVE A MEDIUM RIGID VEHICLE If you’ve held a (C) class driving licence for at least 12 months, you could kickstart a career in the transport industry with a medium rigid licence from Major Training. OBJECTIVE OF THE MR LICENCE COURSE Earning your MR licence with Major Training will allow you to safely drive a 2-axle GVM of more than 8 tonnes. Meeting the necessary MR licence requirements means you’ll be able to legally drive and control a variety of vehicles used in the transport industry – increasing your skills and employability. HEAVY VEHICLE KNOWLEDGE TEST Before beginning your medium rigid licence training with us, you must have completed a written heavy vehicle knowledge test taken at a Department of Transport and Main Roads service centre (click here for locations) There are ten questions in the test, and you need eight out of ten correct answers to gain your heavy vehicle learner’s licence Download your Keys to Driving in Queensland here You can practice for your test with the Department of Transport and Main Roads practice road rules test. STUDENT ENTRY REQUIREMENTS To apply for a higher licence class, you must have held your current licence for a set period. This period must have occurred in the last 5 years (excluding any time that your licence was suspended, surrendered, cancelled or expired). Hold an open or provisional class C or LR licence for 12 months Pay test booking fee to Department of Transport and Main Roads Pass heavy vehicle knowledge test. COURSE COST MR Fast track course (1 day) – $785 MR Full course (3 days) – $975 COURSE OUTCOME An MR licence qualifies you to legally and safely drive a class LR vehicle and bus or truck over 8t GVM with a maximum of two axles. Additional costs may apply. FAQS What is an MR licence?An MR licence authorises you to drive medium rigid vehicles. You must have held a C class licence for at least 12 months to qualify for an MR licence. What can I drive with an MR licence?You’ll be permitted to drive any vehicle with 2 axles and a gross vehicle mass (GVM) exceeding 8 tonnes. With an MR licence, you’ll also be permitted to tow a trailer with a maximum GVM of 9 tonnes. What is the difference between an HR and MR licence?The main difference between an HR and MR licence is the type of vehicle covered under each licence class. HR vehicles are classified as having more than 2 axles and a total GVM over 9 tonnes, whereas MR vehicles are classified as having a maximum of 2 axles and a total GVM over 8 tonnes (and any trailer being towed by an MR vehicle must not weigh over 9 tonnes). How do I get my MR licence?To get your MR licence you must have held an open or provisional class C or LR licence continuously for 12 months. You must also pass a written heavy vehicle knowledge test at a Department of Transport and Main Roads service centre and a practical driving test. | $350 |
